WINTER MAGNIFICENCE
SUNDAY AUGUST 31 3:00PM
ELDER HALL
What better way to spend the last day of winter than enjoying superb choral music in the beautiful acoustic of Elder Hall. Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus follows it’s triumphant “Magical Mozart” concert with “Winter Magnificence”, presenting two exhilarating works. Magnificat, “My soul magnifies the Lord”, is a joyful hymn of triumph of the downtrodden over the powerful. In John Rutter’s setting, it is full of glorious melodies and rich harmony. Delicate solos for soprano soloist are balanced by robust energetic choruses with strong rhythmic drive. We are delighted to celebrate this beloved composer’s eightieth year with this rarely performed masterpiece.
In Psalm Notebook, contemporary Latvian composer, Valts Pūce, sets the Latin text of four psalms, including Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd”. His music is influenced by ethnic and popular themes, making it immediately engaging for listeners.
We are excited to present the Australian premiere of this work.

“Magical Mozart” concert on April 5 was a spectacular success, The near-capacity audience responded with warm enthusiasm to the creative talent on show, from the choir members, Robyn Cornish-Hall, Chany Hoffman, Mary Tatchell, Bec Nelson and Ian Brown, who performed with distinction in excerpts from Mozart’s operas and as soloists in the “Solemn Vespers”, to the rich complexity of the C minor Mass, with its wonderful rich harmony and complex musical language, Soloists Brooke Window, Victoria Coxhill and Kim Worley tackled this demanding music with virtuosity and the instrumentalists from the Adelaide Concert Orchestra provided strong support to the singers, all under the direction of Aldis Sils. It was a thrilling evening of musical magic!
